There is an old gospel song that says;
“When upon life’s billows you are tempest tossed, When you are discouraged, thinking all is lost, Count your many blessings, name them one by one, And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.”
That is good advice, and it is more than just positive thinking. It is an established Biblical principle that thanksgiving has a way of changing our whole environment.
II Chronicles 5:13
and it was the duty of the trumpeters and singers to make themselves heard in unison in praise and thanksgiving to the LORD), and when the song was raised, with trumpets and cymbals and other musical instruments, in praise to the LORD,
“For he is good,
for his steadfast love endures forever,”
the house, the house of the LORD, was filled with a cloud,
Psalm 107:19-22 Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble,
and he delivered them from their distress.
He sent out his word and healed them,
and delivered them from their destruction.
Let them thank the LORD for his steadfast love,
for his wondrous works to the children of man!
And let them offer sacrifices of thanksgiving,
and tell of his deeds in songs of joy!
So, when you are feeling down or stressed out, change your mental environment by recounting the things you are thankful for. As the song says, you will be surprised at what the Lord has done for you. Soon you will be looking up and feeling up, not down. II Chronicles 5:13 and Psalm 107:19-22 both tell is that God responds to thankfulness.
