Our Refuge In Trouble

Psalm 46:1-3 God is our refuge and strength,

A very present help in trouble.

Therefore, we will not fear,

Even though the earth be removed,

And though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea;

Though its waters roar and be troubled,

Though the mountains shake with its swelling.

I’m so glad that God offers to be my refuge when the storms of life are threatening to overwhelm me. I need a very present refuge. I can run to Him and He is always right there, never off somewhere else where I can’t reach Him.

The word picture of the earth being removed, and mountains being carried into the sea makes me visualize a huge road construction project. The giant earth movers are racing around scooping up loads of soil from the mountain and dropping it in massive piles into the sea. And I’m standing there watching and hoping I don’t get run over. Of course, that isn’t what the Psalmist was visualizing. He was thinking of a terrifying storm, maybe coupled with an earthquake.

In any case, whether earth quakes and storms or giant scary machines, it is a picture of a situation that is too big for me to handle and from which I need a refuge. We face all kinds of situations, maybe even daily, that are can overwhelm us, but nothing is too big for God.

Luke 1:37 “For with God nothing will be impossible”. When the angel said that to Mary, she was facing something that was way too big for her. But she knew how to trust God and let Him be the one in charge. Luke 1:38. “Then Mary said, ‘Behold the maidservant of the Lord! Let it be to me according to your word.’ And the angel departed from her”.

God knows what we are facing and is standing ready to shield us and help us. He cares about us and cares for us. He does not force Himself upon us, but He is always ready to respond when we call out to Him. 1Pet. 5:7 “Casting all your care upon him; for he cares for you.”

So, whatever you are facing today, and every day, throw it at God and let Him handle it. Let Him show you what to do and empower you.

Prayer: God, I can’t handle this. You have promised to handle everything for me. So, I’m casting this situation on You, as your word tells me to do. Thank you that You are right here with me and You are taking care of it. I receive, right now, Your promised peace and strength.
