A new robe – a new recipe – a new car – a trip to Borneo – a circle of friends laughing at your humor – a better job – a big bank account – purpose driven living - the latest technology – 3000 friends on Facebook - booze – a one-night stand. The list is endless. That deep, dark, open pit of longing in our hearts. We all know it well. Trying to fill it, we grasp at all kinds of things. You know what the list of things is in your own experience. Yet nothing we try satisfies. Mostly, we can’t name what we are truly longing for. It is the pit of longing for unfailing love. Nothing and nobody but God can fill it.
In the Bible, there are dozens of references to “unfailing love”. And they all refer to it as something that comes only from God. Love from any other source inevitably fails.
“And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.” 1John 4:16 NIV
“May your unfailing love be my comfort, according to your promise to your servant.” Psa. 119:76 NIV
“What a person desires is unfailing love; better to be poor than a liar.” Proverbs 19:22 NIV
Probably our greatest insecurity is the fear of being unloved. Human love is a wonderful thing, when it is healthy. But we are all broken, and human love cannot be unfailing. If we expect it to be, we will always be disappointed. That is an unrealistic expectation. But God’s love is not only unfailing, it is the ultimate.
“Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” John 15:13
When our world is crashing in disarray, there is one place we can run – into the unfailing love of God who knows us perfectly and is waiting with open arms.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, I’m amazed that you love me. But I am thankful that you do and that your love is unfailing. Right now, I need you to scoop me up in your loving Father arms and hold me tight. My world is crashing around me. I need you, my loving Father. Let me just sit here on your lap and enjoy being with you. There I am secure. Thank you.
